Summer 1
We are thrilled to welcome the children back after the Easter holidays. It will be a busy half term with lots of learning experiences inside and outside the classroom, including the addition of Forest School every Wednesday morning which we are all very excited about!
Our learning environment:
This half term, our themes will be 'Growing/Nature' and 'Around The World'. We will plant bean seeds and measure their growth, recording what we see in a diary each week. We will also explore our outside environment, hunt for mini beasts and inspect them through a magnifying glass. We will record and sketch what we see including plants in our environment. The children will hear stories set in different places and countries. There will be opportunities for facts to be learnt and questions to be asked about different environments, the weather and animals that live in different places. We will discuss the different countries our families are from and the languages spoken.
In maths we will focus on the numbers from zero to twenty. The children will use a variety of resources to aid their understanding of what each number represents. They will order and match numerals to the correct quantity and start to recognise the patterns in numbers. We will use a range of materials to support learning such as; numicon, ten frames, counters, cubes, number lines and 100 squares. There will be focus on correct number formation. The children will use playdough, white boards and pens, chunky chalks and buckets of water with large paint brushes outside. We will also add, subtract, share, group and double amounts. The children will learn about odd and even numbers.
In RE, we will explore The Feast of the Ascension of Jesus Christ and Pentecost. The children will learn what the word 'Ascension' means and how Jesus' disciples received the gift of The Holy Spirit.
Things to remember:
- PE is on Monday lunchtime and Tuesday afternoon. Children should come to school wearing their PE kit.

- Homework is set on Thursdays. Please return by the following Wednesday.
Curriculum Overview:
Our Learning Experiences
The children returned to school ready to start their last term in reception. They all came into class and settled at their morning activities.
In Maths we have started the term focusing on numbers bigger than ten. The children have looked for numbers on a large 0-20 number line and matched digit cards 11-20, to amounts. Last week the children used numicon to represent numbers between 11-19. This week the children are using two ten frames and a selection of small resources. They worked in pairs and explained their work, For example-14, is 10 and 4, 16, is 10 and 6... They all worked really well in their pairs.
The children are also learning to order and form numbers 0-20 correctly, using white boards, pens and playdough.
The children were introduced to 'doubles' last week and 'pairs' this week. They have used ladybird templates and counters to double numbers. Some children did finger painting to make butterfly doubles. This week they have used a variety of resources to make pairs. They know that two of something make a 'pair'. The children arranged themselves into pairs during one of our maths sessions. As a class of thirteen, one person did not have a partner. Thirteen is an 'odd' number. As a whole class we have used counters, ten frames and teddies to make pairs, odd and even amounts.
Doubles and pair work introduce the concept of odd and even amounts and numbers. There has been lots of new vocabulary added to our working wall- double, pair, odd, even, the same, different, equal.
Our photo wall is filling up. Everyone has been super busy during 'Chil' time and whole class sessions. There is so much learning happening every day in reception.
The children show much resilience and determination when it comes to independent writing. They are using their phonics to write words by themselves and are becoming familiar with words that are tricky to spell too. They can access sound mats and word mats, along with words around the classroom to help. We love to 'having a go' and try our best!

Reading in Reception
Below is a video to support your children with reading at home. The children will start the year with a picture book. The children should be able to tell you the story using the pictures, the children may need some support by questioning them about what they can see and what they notice on each page. As the term progresses, the children will begin to learn more sounds. Once the children have these sounds secure and are able to blend words using this knowledge, they will be sent home with Read Write Inc Book Bag books to support their learning at home.

Using the Oxford Owl website with a parent login will give you access to hundreds of ebooks for free to enjoy at home, please follow the link for more information.
