PSHE

The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more. At St John Fisher School, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

Intent

The Jigsaw scheme is used in the autumn and spring terms and we use our RHE scheme 'Life to the Full' in the summer term. Jigsaw's cohesive vision helps children understand how they fit into and contribute to the world. With a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw equips our school to deliver relevant and engaging PSHE with a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration, focus and self-regulation.

Implementation

At St John Fisher children are taught:

to develop their self-esteem, confidence and self-awareness to make the right choices.
to develop their social skills and social awareness.
to manage and understand their feelings.
to make sense of their personal and social experiences.
to maintain responsible attitudes towards the maintenance of good physical and mental health, supported by a safe and healthy lifestyle.
to develop effective interpersonal relationships and a caring attitude towards others.
to develop a caring attitude and sense of responsibility about the environment.
to understand how society works and the rights and responsibilities involved.
to use technology safely and responsibly.
to learn about British Values.

We encourage visiting professionals to provide talks / workshops for our children. PSHE values are also explored within both whole school assemblies. Children will be given the opportunity to join and contribute to local and national initiatives e.g. Anti-bullying week and school fund raising activities (See important dates below). Children will have the opportunity to take part in school assemblies, be elected as school council members and they are encouraged to express their thoughts and opinions.

EYFS

PSHE in early years is about making connections and is strongly linked to play. Children are given the opportunity to develop socially during adult focused small group work and also through being a part of whole school activities. PSHE is taught through daily activities linked to a topic as well as on an individual basis to develop personal skills.

Impact

At St John Fisher School our teaching of PSHE will enable children to make progress relative to their own individual starting point. The implementation and impact of the PSHE curriculum is assessed across school to ensure that children are provided with the best possible chance at succeeding. We strive to ensure that by the end of their time with us each child will:

Be able to recognise, understand and manage their own emotions
Understand who they can rely on and ask for support
Look after their own mental health and ask for support where necessary
Be on their way to maintaining a healthy lifestyle

Have developed and maintained healthy relationships with peers and adults
Show respect to themselves and others
